Burkina Faso : state takes full control of the national cotton company
Burkina Faso has announced the full takeover of the National Cotton Company (SOFITEX), placing it under exclusive state control, following the Council of Ministers meeting on April 16. This measure aims to revive the cotton sector, a key pillar of the national economy, after several challenges marked by a 3.7% decline in production in the third quarter of 2025. Cotton accounts for around 20% of the country’s GDP and provides a livelihood for more than 3 million people. According to the authorities, this nationalization is expected to restructure SOFITEX, secure producers’ incomes, and strengthen economic sovereignty.
