Benin : refusal of BCEAO banknotes and coins now punishable by law
Beninese lawmakers have adopted a reform strengthening penalties against the refusal to accept BCEAO banknotes and coins, including those that are slightly damaged but still valid. The law provides for fines and prison sentences for traders and individuals refusing legal tender or charging abusive exchange fees. The aim is to reduce transaction blockages and strengthen confidence in the CFA franc within the West African Monetary Union (UEMOA).
