Cape Verde: Janira Hopffer Almada Elected President of the National Assembly
MP Janira Hopffer Almada has become the first woman elected President of Cape Verde’s National Assembly. Backed by 63 of the 72 lawmakers during the inaugural session of the new legislature elected on May 17, the prominent member of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) now heads the Parliament. Her election comes in a politically significant year marked by legislative elections and a presidential vote scheduled for November.
